Red Card

After you’re approved as a driver, you’ll receive your red card in the mail. Additionally, I recommend ordering a backup card from the store:

Red cards are free and it’s a great idea to keep a spare just in case you lose yours.

CAN I DASH WITHOUT THE CARD?

You need to activate your card before you can dash. If you’re a current driver and report your card lost, you won’t be able to dash until you activate a replacement.

Now, if you’re an experienced driver and know which restaurants require the red card, it’s possible to dash (simply click that you have the red card as you start your dash) and either decline those restaurants or pay out of your own pocket and get reimbursed.

WHEN WILL I HAVE TO USE THE RED CARD?

You’ll need the card for most fast food restaurants; McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s…You won’t need it for the majority of dine-in restaurants.

PAYING VS PLACING THE ORDER

Anytime you have to use the red card, when you swipe arrived, it’ll let you know that you need to pay with the card. If it only states that you need to pay, then the order has already been placed. However, if it states “this order must be placed” then you’ll have to place it. You’ll be placing the order for most fast food.

WHAT TO DO IF THE CARD DECLINES

Make sure it’s being processed as credit. As long as it’s being processed as credit, check the amount and compare it to the amount on your app. DoorDash leaves a little extra room but not a lot.

As an example, if the total on your app is $20 but the actual restaurant total is $22 you’ll be fine. But if the restaurant total is $30, it’s going to decline. If this is the case, there’s two possible issues:

1: DoorDash has an outdated menu and menu prices have increased. If this is the case, click “help” then select “red card declined.” You’ll wait to chat with support, and tell them the restaurant total.

2: The customer is putting a note for an item that requires an upcharge. They may choose an item and in the notes put “add extra……” If they do that with a lot of items, and those requested extras add to the charge, that could also be an issue. Open a chat with support and let them know the customer is requesting extras that are increasing the price.

WHAT DO I SIGN ON THE RECEIPT?

If I need to sign a receipt, I scribble “doordash.”

PAYING WITH YOUR OWN FUNDS

If the card declines and it can’t be solved by support, they will ask you if you’re willing to pay for it yourself. There is no penalty or adverse action if you decline. You’ll be paid half the delivery fee.

If you choose to pay, use this form:
https://help.doordash.com/dashers/s/contactsupport then choose “payments” then “pay out-of-pocket” reimbursements from the sub-category. You’ll receive an email from support asking you to attach a photo of the receipt. It must be a photo of a paper receipt. They do not accept e-receipts.

DO I ADD A TIP?
No. You are not allowed to add a tip.

CAN I USE THE CARD FOR THE SAME RESTAURANT, BUT A DIFFERENT LOCATION?

Yes. As an example, let’s say you took a Wendy’s order, but there’s a closer Wendy’s than the one on the app. You can use it at that location. When you arrive, you’ll get a “are you sure you’re at the location?” message. Just click yes.

CAN I USE THE RED CARD AT THE DRIVE-THROUGH?

Yes, in fact, Wendy’s prefers that you use the drive-through. However, as a tip, I would swipe arrived then look at the items. If there’s a lot of items, and it’s a complicated order, I tend to go in. It’s very hard to check the bag to make sure it’s correct at the drive-through with a lot of items.

IS THERE A WAY OF KNOWING UPFRONT IF I HAVE TO PLACE THE ORDER?

No. It’ll let you know if you need to use the red card, but it won’t let you know if you have to place the order until you swipe arrived at the restaurant.
